Carnival Of Liberty 48
Sorry, I’d planned on organizing this into a vaguely Constitution-esque theme, with articles and clauses and stuff. Conservatives Against Intelligent Design launched a couple weeks earlier than intended and sorta has been taking up a lot of my time. (That’s a blatant plug, by the way).
Favorite Posts: TF Stern discusses a new bureaucracy that has sprung up in Texas, and the hoops law-abiding locksmiths are now forced to jump through in order to remain both law-abiding and locksmiths. He’s a locksmith, a profession I’ve only pursued in a *cough* amateur *cough* setting, but nevertheless I can relate, having to go through THE SAME HIPAA training four times in the past year alone. FOUR!?!?! Very vividly written, good analogies, and a great cautionary tales. We are all enemies of leftist ideologies here, but every now and then (like today as I filled out an hour of paperwork to start my new job), I wonder if bureaucracies don’t pose a more threatening impediment to liberty.
Also a favorite, Eteraz talks about blind worship of democracy, equating it with freedom, and the dangers posed by illiberal democracies to freedom. I can’t get too descriptive because I don’t want to ruin this excellent piece.
Constitution: Hell’s Handmaiden turns his attention to the ‘Constitution Restoration Act’, a document that at first glance would seem a good thing, while being nothing of the sort. Beware of sheep in wolves’ clothing (yes, I said that right).
Amendment 1: Hell’s Handmaiden discusses the infamous mohammed cartoons, the islamic response to them, and the role of government in this whole mess. His central contention is that while a government cannot itself insult a given religion, it has no duty to protect a religion from insults. A position I’m willing to bet most of us agree with. It’s a concise and well-written piece on the meaning of freedom.
Amendment 2: Gullyborg brings up a fascinating example of gay ‘domestic partnerships’ receiving more tax benefits than heterosexual ‘domestic partnerships. Funny that. What’s this have to do with the 2nd amendment? Nothing. But gullyborg is synonymous with another great liberty-minded carnival. Yes, the Carnival of Cordite
Amendment 18 (and/or 21): Mover Mike discusses one of the more egregious instances of nanny state/big brother-ism we’ve seen in the past few weeks: Being charged with ‘public intoxication’ when you’re inside a bar. Why? So you don’t commit a DUI. There’s something somewhere in our founding document about being presumed innocent until proven guilty. Not to mention a famous quote from some dude named Franklin about trading safety for liberty.
Give me your tired, your poor… Francois Tremblay of The Radical Libertarian takes yet another controversial (and slightly anarchic) position, this time about immigration when he declares that freedom of movement and market forces are the only things operating here, everything else is just racism.
Iraq: Deployment Blues brings us pictures of the turret art of hummers over in the sandbox. It’s nice to see the old bomber noseart tradition is alive and well. And it’s also a good chance for all of us to remember the role of the soldier in the maintenance of liberty.
Also on the subject of Iraq, Mensa Barbie looks at the option of forming several smaller states in Iraq. Good post.
Misc: Paul of Paul’s Tips talks about the easiest way to fool smart people
Mark of The Skwib takes a look at the life of Marquis de Sade, a man for whom the descriptor ‘libertine’ would be something of an understatement.
As a shameless plug, here’s my submission.

Carnivals
Yes, indeed. There is a Carnival of Liberty this week, over at OK, so I’m not really a cowboy, and it seems to have the usual plethora of pro-liberty posts worth perusing. And, yes, there’s a Carnival of Cordite, too, at Resistance is Futile!, as…

Glad you enjoyed my article. It’s a shame to watch what has happened to so many industries in the name of protecting the public. I call those folks communists and for some reason they don’t like it; but,if the shoe fits…
